Over the years, officemates and real-life friends John Blitt and JD Harmeyer have had many memorable adventures, from faking a marriage proposal at 30,000 feet to hosting a dinner party at the home of famous Stern Show fan Natalie Maines.
“They’re really made for each other because John will do anything and JD will do anything,” Howard said with a laugh, before revealing the couple’s latest misadventure: a day spent in the Russian and Turkish Baths, a legendary bathhouse with steam rooms, saunas, hot water chambers and cold pools.
“I thought it would be good for his body, his mind, his health – and, yes, for the radio,” John said of his idea to take JD to the bathhouse, explaining that he didn’t tell JD in advance where they were going, but asked him to bring a few things, including some distractions like thermal socks and a dress.
The first stop at the bathhouse was the Russian steam room, but JD immediately found it too hot. “Britt, I can’t stand that guy,” JD cursed. “I couldn’t even breathe.”
Co-host Robin Quivers sympathized with his situation. “I’ve been there, and you can’t imagine how hot it is in those rooms,” she said, adding: “J.D. is a sweaty person… How can he survive that?”
Bullitt tried to get J.D. to put on a sauna cap and dump a bucket of cold water on his head, but it didn’t work. “I felt like my skin was going to burn off,” J.D. told Howard.
After leaving the steam room, JD went to platza therapy, a form of physical therapy that involves repeatedly tapping with a bunch of oak leaves. The experience left him completely relaxed, and he told Blitt everything from his thoughts on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills to his memories of his first orgasm.
After the spa, John treated J.D. to an evening of beer, marijuana, and authentic Russian cuisine on the rooftop terrace of the bathhouse. J.D. liked most of the food, but he found the kasha (fried buckwheat porridge) too dry. John suggested calling the chef and complaining, and J.D. immediately panicked. Despite J.D.’s promise to relax, the day had been torture. “Thanks for enlightening me. I’ll never do that again,” he told John afterward.
