To find the best organic mattresses made from certified natural materials, we tested more than 20 options (plus more than 100 conventional mattresses) and researched countless other products. Of all the mattresses we looked at, we were most impressed with the Avocado Green, which has multiple sustainability and safety certifications and excels in pressure relief, support, and durability for a variety of sleep needs.
While the demand for cleaner sleep continues to grow, it’s also important to consider your specific needs and preferences. Whether you’re a side sleeper or have back issues, we’ve got nine more organic mattresses recommended by experts. Note that natural materials aren’t organic unless they meet certain standards, so keep an eye out for major mattress certifications. Type: Latex Blend | Organic Certification: GOTS and GOLS | Firmness: Hard (7), Medium (6), or Soft (4) | Trial Period: 365 Nights | Warranty: 25 Years
The Avocado Green Mattress earns our title of best organic mattress because every detail is made with sustainability in mind. This mattress has a ton of eco-friendly certifications, including the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS), Made Safe, and Greenguard Gold, which ensure that all materials used are free of harmful substances. Not to mention, the mattress is Fair Trade Certified, which means the factory where it’s made is committed to sustainable practices, safe working conditions, and fair wages.
The best part: Those organic and eco-friendly credentials don’t come at the expense of comfort. In our testing, we found the Avocado Green to be supportive and invigorating. The standard-firm mattresses are best for stomach sleepers, while the medium-firm and soft mattresses are best for back and side sleepers who need more pressure relief. One of our mattress testers, who slept on the luxury Avocado Green mattress, said, “It’s super soft and feels like a cloud. It’s easy to move around and change positions on the mattress without feeling stuck like a memory foam mattress.” That said, the medium and luxury mattresses are more expensive before discounts: $2,099 and $2,899, respectively.
What our writers say: Mattress Update writer Alexandra Garrett said, “I tested the Standard Firm mattress from Avocado Green and was immediately impressed with its buoyancy. Whether I was lying on my stomach, back, or side, I felt comfortable and supported.” For more, read our Avocado Green mattress review.
Type: Latex Blend | Organic Certification: GOLS | Hardness: Medium (6 to 7) | Trial Period: 100 Nights | Warranty: Lifetime
Combination sleepers need a mattress that supports most sleeping positions and allows them to transition comfortably between them. Of all the organic mattresses we reviewed for this list, the Birch Natural Mattress impressed us the most with its versatile medium-firm feel and buoyant support. Plus, it’s made with Greenguard Gold and Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS)-certified materials, meaning it’s free of harmful chemicals and substances. The cotton topper and fleece layer add comfort and breathability, while organic latex and 1,000 individually wrapped innerspring cores provide substantial support and pressure relief. However, if you’re a side sleeper, the Birch Natural Luxe is a better choice because it’s softer to the touch.
What our editors say: “The Birch mattress is filled with real latex foam, which feels lifted and supported, while the wool batting provides just the right amount of cushioning for plenty of comfort and pressure relief,” says Sleep & Mattress Editor Mackenzie Dillon. “As a stomach sleeper, I found this mattress to be supportive and comfortable, but side sleepers may find it too firm.”

As an avid side sleeper, I can’t stress enough the importance of a bed with pressure sore reduction features. Mattresses that are suitable for side sleepers cushion the pressure on sensitive joints and take a lot of the strain off your hips and shoulders, minimizing morning aches. In fact, we’ve found the Amerisleep Organica to be the most ideal organic option for side sleepers, as it combines innersprings with layers of wool and Talalay latex, which provides more pressure relief than a hybrid latex bed. It’s soft enough to support your knees, hips, and shoulders, but supportive enough to keep you in the right position. Plus, the latex used in the mattress is Rainforest Alliance and Eco-Institute certified, meaning it’s sustainably sourced, and the wool is OEKO-Tex Standard 100 certified, meaning it’s been tested for harmful substances. However, unlike the other mattresses in this guide, the Amerisleep Organica does not currently have GOTS or GOLS certification.

According to our sleep experts, a good mattress should provide a balance between pressure relief and support to keep your spine in a comfortable, neutral position. Of all the organic mattresses on our list, we think the Nolah Natural Mattress does this job the best. Made from organic Talalay latex, which has anti-bedsore properties, this bed is ideal for those with chronic back and joint pain. The mattress also features zoned steel springs in the base to provide targeted support for high-pressure areas of the spine. This mattress also does a great job of regulating body temperature, thanks to its cotton cover and perforated latex layer, making it a good choice for those who like to sleep in the heat.
What our editors say: “The Nolah Natural reminds me of a favorite bed that’s gone. It has the firm, supportive feel of latex foam that provides more pressure relief and cushioning than other models I’ve tested—almost like a cross between memory foam and latex foam,” says Dillon. “It’s also softer than most latex foam mattresses I’ve tested, making it a good choice for side and combination sleepers who need extra hip and shoulder support.”
Type: Latex Blend | Organic Certification: GOTS and GOLS | Firmness: Medium Firm (7) | Trial Period: 365 Nights | Warranty: 20 Years
While most of the beds on our list are hybrid mattresses, we especially like the balanced feel of the My Green Mattress Kiwi Organic, which is why we chose it as the best organic hybrid mattress. In particular, we like that it’s both supportive and comfortable, featuring a 7-zone pocket spring system and a GOLS- and Oeko-Tex-certified Dunlop latex comfort layer. (Note: Dunlop latex tends to be firmer and warmer for sleeping than Talalay latex.) The springs provide a neutral body position, while the latex layer relieves pressure, providing a “best of both worlds” feel that suits the needs of a variety of sleepers. It also includes a GOTS-certified organic cotton and wool mattress cover for added breathability.

People who tend to overheat while sleeping need a mattress that can keep them cool and help control those uncomfortable night sweats. While most latex mattresses naturally provide cooler sleep than memory foam mattresses, our favorite organic mattress for hot sleepers is the Saatva Latex Hybrid. It’s made almost entirely from eco-friendly materials that are certified organic, natural, and recycled. In fact, this mattress is Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), Global Organic Textile Standard (GOLS), Eco-Institut, and Greenguard Gold certified. The zoned pocket springs are made from recycled steel, while the comfort layers are made from certified organic latex, cotton, and wool. Moisture-wicking, eco-friendly materials, and the mattress’s air-sprung core make the Saatva Latex Hybrid one of the coolest organic mattresses on the market.
Our Editors’ Rating: “The Saatva Latex Hybrid mattress performed well in our responsiveness tests — its buoyancy makes it easy to move around on,” says senior mattress editor Bridget Chapman. “I found it to be a little firmer to the touch, which is most comfortable if you’re a back or stomach sleeper. It also provides solid edge support, so you can sit on the edge of the bed or sleep on your side without issue.”
Type: Latex Blend | Organic Certification: Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) | Hardness: Firm (8) and Medium (6) | Trial Period: 120 Nights | Warranty: 10 Years
Suitable for: back sleepers, stomach sleepers and combination sleepers; those who want different levels of firmness in one bed; those with back pain
The regular version of the Plank Firm is our favorite firm mattress of 2025, and the Natural version of this mattress adds some eco-friendly elements to appeal to eco-conscious sleepers. The mattress is made with organic cotton and wool on the top and bottom, with a layer of natural latex in the middle and a spring core inside. Like the Plank Firm, the Plank Firm Natural mattress also provides support and durability. The pillow also has a dual-sided design that lets you choose between a medium-firm side (which the brand rates as a 6 out of 10 on its firmness scale) and a firmer side (which rates as an 8 out of 10). The medium-firm side is best for back sleepers who want support and cushioning, while the firm side is best for stomach sleepers who want optimal support.
What our editors say: “Both sides of the Plank Firm Natural are the same firmness, but the extra-firm side is a little firmer,” says Chapman. “It’s a very springy bed, so combination sleepers can move around easily. It also tested well for edge support, so you can use the entire surface of the mattress. To my surprise, it also isolated motion well.”
Type: Latex Blend | Organic Certification: GOLS and GOTS | Hardness: Medium (5) or Medium Hard (6) | Trial Period: 90 Nights | Warranty: 15 Years
Since organic mattresses are made from high-quality, eco-friendly materials, their price can be a bit high. However, there are more affordable mattresses worth considering, such as the Eco Terra Hybrid Latex Mattress. It has the same certification as our favorite organic mattress, the Avocado Green, but is significantly more affordable. It also contains absolutely no synthetic foams, chemical flame retardants, or adhesives. Additionally, it is GOLS, GOTS, and Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified, meaning it is made from organic latex, cotton, and wool that have all been tested for harmful substances. The Eco Terra Hybrid Latex Mattress comes in two comfort levels: medium and medium-firm. As a general rule, we recommend that those who prefer a softer, more supportive bed choose the medium model, while those who prefer more support choose the medium model.
Our Editors’ Rating: Senior Baby Editor Margaret Bador and her husband have been using the Eco Terra medium-firm mattress for about three years. “Our sleep quality immediately improved after purchasing this mattress,” she says. “This mattress provides the support and softness of a hybrid mattress without the worry of chemicals in memory foam. I spent a lot of time researching sustainable mattresses before choosing this one. It’s a great value compared to other mattresses made from the same organic materials.”
Type: Latex | Organic Certification: GOLS and GOTS | Hardness: Medium (5.5) or Medium Hard (8) | Trial Period: 100 Nights | Warranty: Lifetime
Suitable for: Back, side and combination sleepers; those looking for a hotel-type bed; those with back and joint problems
If you’re looking for a more luxurious night’s sleep, we recommend the PlushBeds Botanical Bliss mattress. Made with a thick GOLS-certified latex core instead of innersprings, this mattress provides good pressure relief and support, making your sleep more comfortable. Available in two comfort levels and three heights, it can accommodate a variety of sleep preferences. According to PlushBeds, a medium-firm mattress is ideal for side sleepers who need enough cushioning to relieve pressure in the hips and shoulders, while a medium-firm mattress is great for back or stomach sleepers who need a little more support. Like our favorite, the Avocado Green, the PlushBeds Botanical Bliss has a number of organic and eco-friendly certifications, including from GOLS, GOTS, Greengaurd Gold, Eco-Institut, and Control Union.
What our editors say: “I found the PlushBeds Botanical Bliss Medium Mattress to be a medium-firm mattress,” says Chapman. “It felt a little firm at first, but once I got into bed, the mattress’s layers supported my joints, and the combination of support and pressure relief made it especially comfortable for back sleepers. Back sleepers should also enjoy this bed, as you won’t feel locked into a particular position.”
Type: Latex Blend | Organic Certification: GOLS | Hardness: Soft & Firm | Trial Period: 100 Nights | Guarantee: Lifetime
The Birch Kids Natural Mattress is one of our favorites for toddler beds. Voted “Most Comfortable Kids Mattress” in our guide to the best kids mattresses, the Birch Kids Natural Mattress features a dual-sided design that provides the perfect combination of comfort and support for kids of all ages. The mattress has a firmer side and is suitable for kids ages 3 to 7. For kids ages 8 to 12, the mattress can be flipped over to make it softer. Both sides of the bed are covered with a hypoallergenic cotton mattress pad and a layer of wool that acts as a natural fire retardant, so there’s no need to use harsh chemicals or fiberglass as a fire barrier.
What Our Editors Say: Rose Gordon Sala, deputy editor of Forbes Vetted (with extensive experience as the parenting editor), chose this mattress for her daughter. “She loves the responsiveness of the Talalay latex, which provides optimal comfort for side sleeping,” says Sala. “She’s a teenage athlete who’s growing quickly, and we both noticed that she woke up with less pain after we switched to a natural birch mattress.”
While all of the mattresses we’ve selected are non-toxic, each one is made with a unique combination of materials and features. To help you find the perfect mattress, we’ve compared the most important aspects of our top-recommended mattresses in the table below.
We tested over 100 mattresses, including over 20 organic mattresses, to determine the best organic mattress options for 2025. While the mattresses listed above are our favorites, the following models emerged as favorites during our selection process.
At Forbes Vetted, our writers and editors spend thousands of hours testing and researching mattress products and sleep stories. We rely on our own experience and, where possible, on the expertise of certified sleep experts and medical professionals. Here are the reasons why you should trust us:
To compile this list, we researched products from trusted mattress brands. Our initial screening criteria is that each mattress is organically certified, but that’s just the beginning.
Organic mattresses are made from natural materials and are manufactured according to well-known certification standards. This usually means no synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, etc. They are also more environmentally friendly and renewable than traditional mattresses. Below, we’ll look at the most important aspects to consider when choosing the organic mattress that’s right for you.
There are two main organic certifications for organic mattresses: the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS). Both certifications involve a third party to verify that the mattress is produced responsibly and without the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, and other harmful chemicals.
Besides GOLS and GOTS, there are a few other certifications you may come across when shopping for an organic mattress.
Mattresses come in a variety of designs, including hybrid, memory foam, innerspring, and latex. However, the most common types of organic mattress designs are hybrid and latex.
There are several materials that you will often encounter when purchasing a machine frame. Below we will look at three of the most common categories.
Organic mattresses typically use latex, a natural material that comes from trees. Latex mattresses are usually medium or firm, but you can still find a variety of soft and firm options to suit your preferences. If you want a softer organic mattress, look for one with an orthopedic topper. These mattresses typically have a layer of wool, which adds extra padding on top of the latex.
How you sleep at night will affect the type of mattress you buy, and proper sleeping position is key to a good night’s sleep. “Poor sleeping position can cause neck and back pain, limit mobility, and increase fatigue during the day,” says Samantha Parker Lane, MD, of Memorial Hermann Health System.
Side sleepers may want to choose a softer mattress to help ease the strain on their joints (especially the shoulders and hips). On the other hand, stomach sleepers need a firmer mattress to keep their pelvis level with the rest of their body. Back sleepers should try a medium-firm mattress to provide a balance of comfort and support. This firmness is also good for combination sleepers. As for latex mattresses, Dunlop is generally firmer and more supportive than Talalay, although there are beds that use softer Dunlop latex.
Because of the high quality of the materials used and the complex process of meeting third-party certification standards, organic mattresses are more expensive than memory foam or innerspring mattresses. Even the cheapest options fall into the mid- to high-end price range. However, you can often save money during mattress sales throughout the year. Be especially aware of price drops during Cyber Week and long holiday weekends like Labor Day, Memorial Day, and Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
We have found that latex mattresses made with Dunlop or Talalay latex tend to be the least toxic. Talalay latex is the main material in our Best Choice Avocado Green mattress.
When shopping, look for Greenguard Gold and Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certifications, which guarantee the absence of thousands of toxic substances. Going a step further, consider purchasing an organic mattress that has the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) certifications.
If you want to eliminate toxins from your home or manage severe allergies, an organic mattress is a smart investment. These mattresses use natural and organically produced materials, meaning they are free of many chemicals that may be linked to certain health risks, such as asthma. They also reduce exposure to gases emitted by many foams.
