No single silhouette dominated the fall/winter 2023 bag trends; in fact, designers thought of every conceivable design element.
When it comes to size, we’re once again faced with the dilemma of either going big or going home with an XXL. Nothing new, but it’s still fun to fit all your everyday essentials into a tote. The loose silhouettes of spring/summer 2023 are giving way to looser, more structured pieces this fall; dynamic micro-sculptures are perfect for adding substance to oversized outerwear and chunky sweaters.
One of the biggest trends in fall accessories is texture. The use of tactile sensations is not surprising – after all, there’s no better time than winter to use luxurious fabrics like shearling and suede to add a little warmth to a wardrobe lacking in vitamin D. Another big theme across ready-to-wear and bag collections was colour, particularly red and metallic accents. They may be a festival classic, but thanks to designs from Coperni, Chanel and Jacquemus, they feel more premium than ever.
Creative directors are known to look to the past and draw inspiration from the archives. This season, many big names, from Gucci to Fendi and Dior, have reimagined their iconic logos and most coveted silhouettes. A Vogue favourite was the updated Gucci Horsebit shoulder bag – a nod to the Tom Ford era – available in a range of colours and sizes. For those who simply want to add practical style to their wardrobe essentials, there are plenty of understated luxury options worth investing in; if you want a bag that will last you from fall to spring, Khaite and The Row are great options.

The curvier shapes of past seasons have allowed looser silhouettes to take center stage this fall. Prada, Tory Burch, and Ferragamo have led the way with structured top handles that can be worn from day to night. The Row’s Dalia, available in a variety of materials from suede to patent leather, is a must-have for Vogue editors this season. But if you’re somewhere in between minimalist and maximalist, be sure to check out Ferragamo’s cherry red bag with a clear rubber handle.
Raspberry, cherry, caramel apple – fashion’s love affair with these rich colours continues to this day, with brands like Chanel, Coperni and Alexander McQueen releasing entire series of bold bags. These bags come in a variety of shapes and sizes, making it easy to find the right colour for the season.
You’ll definitely want to take a closer look at what’s in your (or your mom’s or grandma’s) closet, because classic brands like Dior, Fendi, Gucci, and more are reviving classic logo prints and shapes. We love those classic logos and shapes equally, but Gucci’s Horsebit Chain Shoulder Bag (small and versatile) might be what we want most for the holidays.
The only thing that really glitters is gold… and silver. Metallic hues, so prominent on the Dries Van Noten and Givenchy runways and equally popular in the streetwear world, have also been reimagined by contemporary brands Staud and Hereu, who have applied their Midas touch to iconic silhouettes like the Ollie and Bombon, respectively. Pair these iridescent hues with classic autumn fabrics like mohair and cashmere for maximum tactile playfulness.
Textures naturally flow into the fall/winter collections—designers are really going for tactile fabrics this season—think cozy shearling at Proenza Schouler, scratchy suede at Loewe, and luxe suede at Toteme and J.Crew.
A new era of oversized totes has arrived, thanks to Khaite, The Row, and Burberry, which have combined practicality with beauty. Not only do these bags make great briefcase options (imagine all the laptop space!), but Khaite’s luxe weekender bags and Proenza Schouler’s felt totes are also great travel companions. These bags aren’t just meant to be worn over one shoulder; they can also be worn cross-body or, if Burberry’s Daniel Lee insisted, on the hip.
Jewellery-inspired straps have once again proven their longevity, from the slim and delicate Khaite to the bold and heavy JW Anderson. Stella McCartney also went two-tone metallic, while Loewe kept it low-key with sterling silver hardware. Tiny chains are perfect for evening events, but we prefer chunkier ones that add a cool-girl edge to more casual looks.
