Product designer Daniyar Uderbekov presented a screen made of natural wool felt, which has soundproofing properties and can be folded into various shapes. Made from natural wool using the wet felting method (in which the wool fibers are felted under the influence of friction, soap and water), this felt has a sound-absorbing effect, effectively absorbing noise. The screens are made of biodegradable materials, including wool, wood and special dyes. The creamy white structure is painted on one side with a spray paint that combines bright and pastel colors. Remarkably, it does not have metal mechanisms, hinges or opening systems, and the movement is carried out solely due to the flexibility and strength of the felt.
The wool felt screen designed by Daniyar Uderbekov measures 3000 x 1750 mm, weighs 40 kg and can be assembled in various configurations, such as a headboard, a phone booth or a traditional screen. The four panels of the screen are decorated with 3D signs inspired by ancient Eurasian symbols representing fertility, luck, kindness and the hearth. The last door of the screen has a unique design element – three convex spheres. This detail is a reference to the Soviet sci-fi film “Moscow-Cassiopeia”, in particular, to the portal on the planet Alpha. This homage reflects the designer’s childhood fascination with the film. Overall, the screens of the Kazakh designer combine functionality and cultural references in an eco-friendly design.
