Wellness retreats have come a long way since the days of strict ashrams and radical boot camps. Today, you can restore your body and mind at five-star resorts that use both cutting-edge science and ancient healing techniques to leave you feeling refreshed. Whether you’re looking for serious pampering or a true detox, you have more options than ever before, whether you’re close to home or far away.
The latest wellness retreats are raising the bar, offering everything from rooms designed for optimal sleep to cutting-edge biotherapeutic techniques and incredible cuisine. From a cozy Ayurvedic retreat in the Italian Alps to a luxury Las Vegas spa that turns the ancient art of sauna into a show, here are 10 worthy getaways where you need to improve your well-being.
In recent years, Six Senses has become one of the biggest players in the wellness space. Last year, the brand acquired a five-star ashram in India and transformed the 21-acre property into its first Six Senses resort. Set amid sal trees in the Himalayan foothills near Rishikesh, the birthplace of yoga, the 82-room resort offers five-, 14-, and 21-day retreats based on Ayurvedic, Chinese, and Tibetan medical practices. Your day might include four yoga classes, meditation, a mountain bathing class, a guided hike, and nutritious meals (delicious curries and fresh salads) tailored to your constitution. If you can take a break from your cozy linen kurta, it’s worth exploring off-site, such as a jungle safari in Rajaji National Park or a private Aarti ceremony in Rishikesh.
Key lessons learned: Healers trained at the Dalai Lama’s Institute of Tibetan Medicine and Astronomy use Sowa Rigpa healing methods such as dhug, a healing method in which medicinal ingredients are injected into various parts of the body to clear energy blockages and improve circulation.
Nestled in a quiet corner of the Catskill Mountains, Hemlock Neversink is a former New Age health spa that doubles as an adult camp and wellness center. The 34-room resort takes a playful approach to wellness, offering quirky amenities like therapeutic hikes with resident goats and terrarium workshops led by the hotel’s garden director. Set on 230 acres, guests can exercise on six miles of hiking trails and outdoor tennis courts. A dedicated exercise building hosts classes like yoga nidra and offers personal training, and the spa uses locally sourced ingredients in treatments from detox wraps to invigorating massages. Food is king here. Bittersweet’s multi-course dinner menu is plant-based and includes delicacies such as fried persimmon with cashews and Thai basil, and ricotta, spinach and nasturtium ravioli.
Must-try: The Back to Nature body treatment begins with a berry seed and white peat exfoliation, followed by a mask with organic mushrooms, immortelle and berry oil to stimulate cell renewal and reduce inflammation. Finally, enjoy a soothing salt bath with birch extract.
Boasting biophilic design and an unrivaled location, 1 Hotel is an oasis of calm perched above beautiful Hanalei Bay. You can tailor your wellness getaway to include surfing, paddleboarding, Bamford Spa, Anatomy’s elite gym, locally-owned restaurants, and the on-site Vitahealth Precision Wellbeing functional medicine center. Or, if you book one of the hotel’s new Within Journeys programs, you can also trust your own personal wellness sage. Ranging from four to seven nights, the programs focus on themes like rejuvenation and nutrition, and include IV vitamins, hydrotherapy, and access to cutting-edge equipment like marine float tanks and hyperbaric oxygen chambers to promote relaxation. Some dives include off-site activities like personalized instruction and farm tours. Whatever theme you choose, your room will be equipped with well-being amenities such as infrared PEMF therapy, Normatec compression boots and healing crystals.
Key Impressions: Tulsi Honey Facial removes impurities to reveal smoother, younger-looking skin.
Last November, Engel Ayurpura opened as the first hotel in the Dolomites dedicated to the ancient healing art of Ayurveda. The 15 light-wood, lodge-style rooms have a distinctly Alpine feel, but the treatments they use have deep Indian roots. On arrival, one of the Ayurveda specialists will take your pulse to determine your constitution, which will determine your diet and treatments for the duration of your stay. Nine different programs range from a four-day introductory course in Ayurveda to an intensive 21-day Panchakarma journey, comprising 36 treatments that focus on detoxification. Meals are prepared with locally sourced ingredients and flavored with Ayurvedic spices (the signature breakfast is a hearty porridge with ginger, cinnamon, chia seeds, cardamom, and hazelnuts). Guests can hike along local trails or admire forest views from the spa’s infinity pool or panoramic sauna.
Key Experience: The seven-day panchakarma treatment detoxifies the body through a metabolism-boosting diet and therapies such as abhyanga (warm oil massage targeting specific doshas) and shirodhara (a treatment in which warm oil is poured onto the forehead to achieve mental and physical balance).
Murrieta Hot Springs opened in 1902 and immediately became a favorite getaway for Southern Californians. The legendary resort between Los Angeles and San Diego reopened in February after 30 years of closure. History will repeat itself, as updated facilities include a spa specializing in traditional hydrothermal therapy, a bar and restaurant, and a fitness center offering innovative classes like water and sound baths. The historic bathhouse features a steam room, panoramic sauna, cold plunge pool, and geothermal mud loft. But the main attraction remains the hot, mineral-rich waters of the thermal springs. The 46-acre property is home to more than 50 geothermal pools, cold plunge pools, and water features. The resort offers day passes, but overnight guests have 24-hour access to the spa and can book a specially equipped sleep room with a Bryte Balance bed and surround sound.
Driving up to Estelle House along the manicured, tree-lined driveway, stress melts away. Set in 60 acres, Estelle House is on the doorstep of the Cotswolds and surrounded by 3,000 acres of gardens and parkland. Sister Maison Estelle is a chic private member’s club in London’s Mayfair that doubles as a country club and hotel, with cricket pitches, cycle paths and a state-of-the-art gym offering 37 classes.
At its core, the hotel is a Jacobean Revival mansion, painstakingly restored to retain period features such as ornate plaster ceilings, as well as housing an impressive collection of modern art and antiques. But the real draw is the Eynsham Baths, which open in March. Hidden away in the woods, this nearly 32,300-square-foot wellness retreat was modeled on ancient Roman baths. Ten treatment rooms offer a range of treatments, from vitamin IVs and Skin Design London facelifts to Ku Nye Tibetan massages and reflexology. There’s also a Turkish bath, rasul, special breathing pool and contrast therapy circuit.
Key Experience: The 180-minute thermal journey takes guests between six different thermal zones, from cold baths to hot baths, tepidariums to hay saunas, stimulating the body’s immune system and metabolic rate, while calming the nervous system.
Nestled between jungle-covered cliffs and the ocean, ONDA Spa is the largest spa in Bahia de Banderas, spanning 35,000 square feet. Its name comes from the Mexican phrase “que onda,” meaning “how do you feel?” No matter your answer, you’ll find an experience that’s perfect for you, whether it’s an intuitive painting class with a local artist or a seaside sound bowl meditation. Spa guests can enjoy a hydrotherapy pool, steam room, sauna, and a fitness center that offers a wide range of classes. ONDA is the only spa in Mexico to use Sanara, a Latin American plant-based skincare brand, so the skincare treatments here are exceptional.
Key Experience: The El Cuerpo ritual begins with a mate foot bath, followed by a full-body exfoliation using healing botanicals such as cocoa soap and Chilean rosehip seed oil, and ends with a full-body massage.
A day at this 55,000-square-foot temple of wellness will have you abandoning your Sin City habits. Treatments draw on both ancient medical wisdom (the signature massage uses the Kansa Wand, an Ayurvedic tool that stimulates energy flow) and cutting-edge science (red LED light therapy reduces fine lines). The Reboot Lounge specializes in reviving tired legs and feet, while the Celestial Waters Passport is the perfect place to detox, offering a variety of contrasting treatments. In true Las Vegas style, even the spa treatments are top-notch, like the Snow Shower, which uses a snow machine to fill a chilly 14-degree space with snow. Once you’ve unwinded, head to Wright Fit, a 14,000-square-foot gym co-created with fitness expert Jay Wright.
Don’t miss: Aufguss Sauna is one of the largest active saunas in the United States. This social wellness complex combines a sauna, aromatherapy steam, and a theatrical performance of towel movements set to music and lights.
The venerable luxury California boot camp will open its first East Coast location in the Hudson Valley in April. The detox center’s model is high-intensity workouts and a restrictive plant-based diet, but the classic weeklong stay will be supplemented by shorter three- and four-day trips for those with tight schedules. The shorter plans include workouts of up to six hours, but they’re less intense, with an 8 a.m. wake-up call instead of the usual 5:30 a.m., and, unlike the Malibu flagship, guests can choose from services like acupuncture and chiropractic.
Located 45 minutes north of Manhattan on the border of Tuxedo Park and Sloatsburg, this 40,000-square-foot, 25-room resort was built in 1902 by J.P. Morgan as a wedding gift for his daughter. The resort features a 5,000-square-foot sun deck with a whirlpool and plunge pool, as well as a 2,000-square-foot fitness center. But most of the action takes place outdoors. Two- to four-hour hikes take you along the trails of nearby Lynnwood and Harriman state parks, and the resort has a lake with activities like kayaking and paddleboarding. If that sounds like too much, don’t worry, there’s time for a nap.
Highlights: The ranch’s newest colon hydrotherapy service, where water cleanses the colon and improves digestion, sleep and energy levels.
