International Women’s Day is an international holiday held on March 8 every year to commemorate the women’s rights movement.
This anniversary is also an official holiday in many countries. Societies across the country also celebrate the important contributions women have made in economic, political and social fields on International Women’s Day.
The first Women’s Day was held in New York on February 28, 1909, organized by the American Socialist Party.
On March 8, 1909, thousands of female workers in Chicago held a street demonstration, demanding shorter working hours, increased wages, and the right to vote, and shouted the slogan “Bread and Roses” symbolizing economic security and quality of life.
On March 8, 1917, female textile workers in Petrograd (St. Petersburg), the capital of the Russian Empire, went on strike and marched throughout the city, triggering the beginning of the Russian Revolution;
seven days later, Russian Emperor Nicholas II abdicated, and Russia The Provisional Government of the Republic ensured that women had the right to vote.
In 1917, Soviet Russia designated March 8 as a national holiday. Before this day was officially recognized by the United Nations in 1975, it was mainly celebrated in socialist countries.
